About John Shelby Spong
John Shelby Spong served as the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, New Jersey, for more than twenty years before his retirement in 2000. He is recognized as one of the leading voices for liberal Christianity in America, challenging traditional thinking on basic Christian doctrines in an effort to make them relevant today. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina and earned his Master of Divinity degree from the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Virginia. He is the author of fifteen books, including his newest book, Jesus for the Non-Religious.
