About David Gergen

David Gergen served as an advisor to Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton, and as a campaign aide to George H. W. Bush. He is editor-at-large of U.S. News and World Report and a regular commentator on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. A professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, his newest book is Eyewitness to Power. Over the years, he has watched chief executives deal with decision-making, with defining and articulating their goals, and with measuring their success or failure in capturing the public’s imagination. He believes that a great leader must possess seven core elements: personal character, a moral vision for the nation, exceptional political skills, a capacity to mobilize followers, the ability to recover from defeat, the willingness to listen to wise advisors, and the capacity to bequeath a workable legacy.
