About Ernest Boyer

Ernest Boyer is the president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He is the former U.S. Commissioner of Education and a former Chancellor of the State University of New York. In his book High School: A Report on Secondary Education in America, he recommends adopting a core curriculum for all students, which would include tougher foreign language and English requirements. In his book College: The Undergraduate Experience in America, he observes that undergraduate institutions put greater emphasis on research than teaching, and he urges that more resources be directed to undergraduate education programs, to orientation and faculty mentoring for new students,  and to the development of community service programs for all students. He is currently working on a policy study on preparing young children for school.
