Lawrence R. Jacobs is an American political scientist and founder and director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance (CSPG) at the University of Minnesota.

In his recently updated book, Democracy Under Fire: Donald Trump and the Breaking of American History, Jacobs examines the historic forces within America’s party system that he argues have, over time, dangerously weakened democracy, widened political inequality as well as racial disparities, and rewarded toxic political polarization. He offers recommendations to restrain the unbridled ambition of politicians who thrive on division and instead generate broad citizen engagement with tangible policy making.
