About Shirley Chisholm
Shirley Chisholm has made history throughout her long career of public service. In 1968, she was the first African American woman elected to the United State Congress, and for thirteen years, she served on key congressional committees as the first African American woman to do so. In 1972, she became the first Black candidate for a major party’s nomination for president of the United States and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. She is the author of two books, her autobiography Unbought and Unbossed, and The Good Fight, the story of her presidential bid.
