About George McGovern
George McGovern began his career as a history professor at Dakota Wesleyan University in South Dakota. His Ph.D. in history from Northwestern University and his service as a decorated pilot in World War II helped form his interest in foreign policy, and his childhood years in farm country influenced his lifelong interest in the politics of agriculture. In 1960, President Kennedy named him the first director of the Food for Peace Program. Following that, he served eighteen years in the U.S. Senate, and in 1972, he ran for president on the Democratic ticket. He served as the U.S. Director of the United Nations Agencies on Food and Agriculture, and he has partnered with Senator Bob Dole to develop strategies to ensure that every child in the world receives a school lunch. His latest book is The Third Freedom: Ending Hunger in Our Time.
