About Bernice Johnson Reagon

Bernice Johnson Reagon is a Professor of Fine Arts at Spelman College in Atlanta, a Professor Emeritus of History at American University, and Curator Emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. A renowned singer and composer, she received the 2003 Heinz Award for the Arts and Humanities for her work in African American cultural history and music. During the civil rights movement of the 1960s, she was a member of the Freedom Singers. In 1973, she founded the internationally acclaimed a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock. During her tenure with the group, she produced most of their recordings, including the Grammy-nominated Still the Same Me.
