About James Fallows

James Fallows is a national correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly. His recent work includes a cover story on post-war Iraq, which won the National Magazine Award for Public Interest. He is the author of seven books, including National Defense, which won the National Book Award, and he is a regular commentator on National Public Radio. Before becoming a journalist, he served as a speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter. In 1996, he published the book Breaking the News: How the Media Undermine American Democracy, in which he asserts that journalists devote more energy to their own status and to the game of politics than to reporting on critical issues of the day.
