About Martin Friedman
Martin Friedman is the director of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. He joined the Walker in 1958 and became its director in 1961. Under his guidance, the Walker’s collections expanded to reflect crucial examples of contemporary artistic development, while concurrently developing innovative approaches to audience engagement. He has organized more than two dozen major exhibitions. In 1971, he oversaw the construction of the new Edward Larrabee Barnes’ award-winning building, as well as its expansion in 1984, and in 1988, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Today, the Walker is recognized internationally as a singular model of a multidisciplinary arts organization.
