About Harold Wilson

Harold Wilson was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1976. Educated at the University of Oxford, he served as a lecturer, research fellow, and, at age 21, as one of the youngest Oxford dons of the century. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1945 and then appointed president of the Board of Trade, serving as Britain’s youngest cabinet minister since 1792. He became the Labour Party’s spokesperson on finance and foreign affairs and in 1963 was elected leader of the party. When Labour won the general election in 1964, he became prime minister.
