About Paul Starr

Paul Starr is a professor of sociology at Princeton University, co-editor of The American Prospect, a magazine he founded with journalist Robert Kuttner and former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, and a former advisor on health policy in the Clinton administration. He is the author of the book The Social Transformation of American Medicine, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction and the Bancroft Prize in American History. His new book, The Creation of the Media, explores the forces that have shaped communications over three and a half centuries. He argues that distinctive political choices led to the rise of the American media and to the issues that continually challenge the media, including censorship and indecency, media concentration, and partisanship and the news.
