About Jose Ramos-Horta

José Ramos-Horta has been the leading spokesperson for human rights and self-determination for his homeland, East Timor. In 1996, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. In 1975, Indonesia invaded the tiny country and killed 200,000 of its citizens. In the quarter-century since the invasion, the East Timorese movement for freedom has been met with violence and repression and with silence from the international community. In 1999, after years of struggle, the East Timorese voted unequivocally for independence from Indonesia. Despite the violence that followed the vote, the road to independence was paved. After 25 years in exile, Jose Ramos-Horta returned to East Timor in December 1999 to help rebuild his homeland.
