About Kathy Halbreich

Kathy Halbreich is Director of the Walker Art Center. Before coming to Minneapolis in 1991, she was the founding curator of the Department of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She also served as Director of the Albert and Vera List Visual Arts Center at M.I.T. where she worked with architect I.M. Pei to design the building. She has been recognized for her cultural influence and business acumen by such publications as ARTnews, Newsweek, and Vanity Fair. In her presentation, she will explore editorial decision-making and media coverage that favor movies over art and architecture, mainstream activities over contemporary art practice, and local art scenes over national or international reporting, and how these decisions shape the art and ideas to which the public is exposed.
