About Michael DeBakey

Michael DeBakey is a cardiac and vascular surgeon and a pioneer in the development of the artificial heart and coronary bypass surgery. His Dacron artificial arteries, developed to replace excised segments of diseased arteries, are now used throughout the world. He is currently Chancellor of Baylor College of Medicine and chairman of its Department of Surgery. He is a recipient of the Medal of Freedom with Distinction, the highest civilian award bestowed by the president of the United States.
