About Buffy Sainte-Marie
Buffy Sainte-Marie is a singer, composer, visual artist, educator, and social activist. She was born on a Cree reservation in Canada’s Qu’Appelle Valley and was later adopted and raised in Maine and Massachusetts. She holds degrees in Oriental philosophy and education and earned a Ph.D. in fine arts at the University of Massachusetts. She became widely known in the 1960s for her protest and love songs. In 1983, she won an Academy Award for the song Up Where We Belong from the film An Officer and a Gentleman, and for five years, she was a cast member on Sesame Street. She is the founder of the Nihewan Foundation for American Indian Education. Its Cradleboard Teaching Project facilitates communication among thousands of First Nation children in Canada and the United States through computer-networking and a Native Studies curriculum.
