About Donna Shalala

Donna Shalala is the Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Clinton administration. Her agency is responsible for health, welfare, food and drug safety, medical research, and income-security programs serving the American people. The department also provides direct services and income support to more than one in every five Americans. Prior to this appointment, she served as Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 1980, she became the youngest woman to lead a major American college when she assumed the presidency of Hunter College, part of the City University of New York.
